The Peru LNG terminal is protected by a detached breakwater against incident swells, but relatively open to the effect of infragravity waves that caused vessels to surge at the berth and has resulted in a low overall berth availability.
To resolve this, six Vertical ShoreTension® (VST) units were installed on the jetty in 2022, four on mooring dolphins and two on breasting dolphins. The VST’s have been specifically designed for use on dolphins with a reduced footprint compared to the horizontal system and a higher maximum operating load.
After installation of the six VST units at the berth, vessels are loaded in approximately 20% larger swell conditions, while reducing the vessel’s surge motions with more then 75% and therefore significantly reducing mooring line peak forces, the berth availability has increased with well over 20%.
